Life360 Is Awarded Attorneys’ Fees In Patent Troll Case Against AGIS Inc. and Kenyon and Kenyon LLP

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 3, 2015 Life360, the leading Family Network, shared today that it has been awarded $684,190.25 in attorneys’ fees as the prevailing party in the patent infringement lawsuit filed by Advanced Ground Information Systems Inc. (AGIS) and their counsel, Kenyon and Kenyon LLP.

On Friday, March 13, 2015, Life360 received a favorable verdict in the United States Court for the Southern District of Florida (Case Number 9:14-cv-80651). The jury found no infringement on all four patents that were asserted against Life360.

In the order filed this week awarding Life360 attorneys’ fees, United States District Court Judge Donald M. Middlebrooks noted that the case filed by AGIS and Kenyon and Kenyon LLP was “exceptionally weak” and that “continued assertion of these claims seemed designed to extract settlement not based on the merits of the claim but on the high cost of litigation.”

“Judge Middlebrooks’ decision confirms what we knew all along – this case was nothing more than a meritless shakedown attempt that fortunately backfired in a big way for AGIS and their attorneys at Kenyon and Kenyon,” said Alex Haro, co-founder and president of Life360. “The tide is turning against patent trolls and we hope this win emboldens others in the tech ecosystem to stand up to bullies.”

AGIS filed its patent infringement suit against Life360 in May 2014 just days after Life360 had announced a $50 million Series C and signed a strategic partnership with ADT Security Systems to collaborate on the connected home. Under AGIS’ interpretation of their claims, the alleged patents could impact any application that either shows a location marker on a map or connects a group of people using location-sharing capabilities on smartphones.
